* * * * * The San Francisco
Board of Supervisors passed a Resolution,
declaring the Warden an historical San Francisco boat. My thanks to Supervisor Gavin Newsom for his interest and his appreciation. * * * * * I also discovered the two old
Swedish gentlemen; Woody Woodruff
and his brother-in-law, Everet Soldin. The pair taught prisoners at McNeil
Island Penitentiary boat yard how to build boats. Woody possesses a model
of the Warden Johnston, built by a prisoner at McNeil Island Penitentiary
for the warden's office.
One of Woody's friends, Jack Zukowski, provided us with two of the great photos of the Warden Johnston:
On the ways before the launch, and
in the water off McNeil Island.
Jack was born and raised on the island, and he worked there for 30 years as a boat skipper.
Jack Zukowski passed away in April 2001.

My thanks to Mr. Charles Fracchia of the
San Francisco Historical Society for his help,
and Mr. Ed Zelinsky, trustee of the World Ship Trust,
which recently made me the recipient of the Frank Carr Award. The award is bestowed upon
individuals for their outstanding efforts in historic boat restoration.
I am deeply honored and confident that together we can advance the Warden Johnston cause.
