Summer 2008 - WARDEN JOHNSTON FOR SALE! $99,500 or best offer.

Located in San Rafael, California at Lowrie Yacht Harbor. The boat is a 60 ton vessel. It is 65 feet long and 17 feet wide. It draws 7 feet. The Warden Johnston was previously U.S Coast Guard inspected.

The Port of San Francisco's Head Warfinger Hedley Prince at Fisherman's Wharf expressed interest in seeing the Warden Johnston displayed and preferably used for a maritime purpose at the end of the Embarcadero.

This boat has a rich history and is named for the first and founding warden of Alcatatraz, James A. Johnston. Better known for his second career, James. A Johnston was hand-picked and recruited out of retirement by the one and only J. Edgar Hoover. Johnston's previous career was the warden of San Quentin.

All inmates from 1945 to 1961 were transported on and off the island via the Warden Johnston, including such prisoners as Machine Gun Kelly and Robert Stroud (aka The Birdman).

My thanks to the Markey Machine Company of Seattle, who did a brilliant job of restoring the anchor windlass to near-new condition. Markey Machine Company has been in business for nearly a century, and was the original manufacturer of the windlass.

Thanks again to Mr. Charles Fracchia of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society for his efforts to further the appreciation of local history; in particular the fiscal sponsorship of the Warden Johnston restoration.
